Board continues state assessment discussion

Passes resolution recognizing September as Attendance Awareness Month

The Colorado State Board of Education met for its regularly scheduled meeting on Sept. 10. Highlights from the meeting include:

Assessments

The board continued a discussion on the statewide assessment system, options and next steps. Staff provided updates on department assessment activities in response to the WestEd study and an overview of statutory expectations and the desired attributes of Colorado’s Statewide Assessment System. The presentation also focused on an analysis of the impact on district and school performance frameworks of moving to the federally-required minimum assessments. The department presented recommendations of the School Readiness Assessment Subcommittee regarding additions to the state’s School Readiness Assessment Menu. Staff recommended adding three assessments to the state board approved menu of assessments:

  • Riverside Early Assessments of Learning (REAL)
  • Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP-K 2015)
  • Teaching Strategies GOLD Survey

Panel Discussion

The board held a discussion on the Advanced Placement (AP) U.S. history exam. A panel discussion included Terry Whitney, government relations-West Region, College Board; Fritz Fischer, history professor, University of Northern Colorado and Larry Krieger, retired teacher and author. The panel presented supporting and opposing views of the curriculum framework and engaged with the board in a rich discussion.

The state board passed a resolution recognizing September as Attendance Awareness Month.

The board approved the rules for the Colorado counselor corps program.

Emergency Rules

The board approved emergency rules for the administration of adult education and literacy grant program.

The board approved emergency rules for the administration of the English Language Proficiency Act.

The board approved emergency rules for the administration of the School Turnaround Leaders Development Program.

Notice of Rulemaking

The board approved the notice of rulemaking hearing for the rules for the administration, certification and oversight of Colorado online programs.

The board approved the notice of rulemaking hearing for the rules for the administration of the adult education and literacy grant program.

The board approved the notice of rulemaking for the rules for the administration of automatic waivers for charter schools.

The board approved the notice of rulemaking for the rules for the administration of the English Language Proficiency Act.

The board approved the notice of rulemaking for the rules for the administration of the School Turnaround Leaders Development Program

 

The board approved the notice of rulemaking for the rules governing the renewable energy and energy efficiency in our schools loan program.
