CDE to give free backpacks to homeless students

Working with Feed the Children, 1,680 backpacks will go to students in need

The Colorado Department of Education and Feed the Children are continuing a partnership to provide 1,680 backpacks to Colorado school districts to distribute to students experiencing homelessness. Feed the Children is also providing several pallets of school supplies, books and snacks to augment the backpacks.

The backpacks are available to McKinney-Vento Homeless education liaisons in Colorado and are distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis. This year, CDE is able to provide backpacks to 31 districts.

Backpacks will be distributed on:
Thursday, Sept. 11 from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Colorado reported 23,293 homeless children and youth in the 2012-2013 school year, a number that has more than tripled in a decade.
