State Board of Education supports governor's full-day kindergarten plan

DENVER - The Colorado State Board of Education today approved a resolution supporting Gov. Jared Polis’ proposal to offer free, full-day kindergarten throughout the state.

The board has long supported early literacy programs to ensure that all students are reading at grade level by the end of third grade.

“We know that high-quality kindergarten programs can help us close opportunity and achievement gaps and ensure that all students have a strong foundation for success throughout their school years,” said Board Chairwoman Angelika Schroeder.

Vice Chairman Steve Durham said the board supports legislators and the governor in their effort to leverage the state’s strong economy to build a strong foundation for Colorado’s youngest learners.

“The proposal doesn’t create a new mandate for districts or for parents, but it enables districts to offer free, full-day kindergarten for all, and it will help ensure all students are on the path to success,” Durham said.

Currently, the state reimburses districts for half-day kindergarten instruction. Many districts offer full-day kindergarten either by allocating other resources or charging tuition.
