Frequently Asked Questions about Parents Encouraging Parents (PEP) Conferences

How much does it cost to attend a PEP conference?

PEP is offered free-of-charge to Colorado parents of children with disabilities and Colorado professionals by the Colorado Department of Education (CDE). You are responsible for your own transportation; however, CDE will provide for your lodging and meals during the conference, with the exception of Friday night's dinner, which will be on your own.

Can I bring my children to PEP?

PEP is a parent-focused conference, designed for Colorado parents and professionals, and is not an event for children. Childcare is not provided. Conference participants are responsible for transportation, childcare and meal arrangements for any person or caregiver who is not confirmed to attend the conference. A family member or a caregiver may stay in your room if providing care for a child. Some hotels may charge for extra people staying in a room. If that is the case, then the participant would be responsible for making arrangements and paying for any extra charges. At no time will children be permitted to enter the conference sessions or dining rooms.*

*The only exception would be mothers with nursing babies. If you require this special consideration, please contact a PEP staff member at 303-866-6846 or 1-877-834-0588 (leave your name and phone number).

Do I have to stay for the entire conference?

Each PEP conference is designed to be of greater value to parents and professionals who attend the entire conference. All topics of discussion flow together from the opening session to the closing, so to miss a day or even a session would mean missing valuable information and resources. Therefore, it is expected that participants stay for the conference in its entirety, from Thursday 5:00 pm through Saturday 3:00 pm. Please choose an appropriate PEP conference date where that will be possible. In addition, each PEP conference has a wait list. If you are unable to commit to the entire conference, we ask that you wait to attend a future conference to enable another person to attend.

Can I attend PEP alone?

The only requirement for PEP participants is that they be a Colorado parent/guardian of a child with a disability and/or be a Colorado professional who works with children with disabilities. We strongly encourage both parents to attend and single parents to attend and bring a support person who will also participate in the conference (grandparent, sibling, other relative, a close family friend, or caregiver). PEP is an intensive, informational conference and could be overwhelming for a person attending alone.

If I come alone, must I share a hotel room?

No. If you are the only person listed on your PEP application, you will be reserved alone in a room, unless you indicate on your application that you are willing to share a room with another participant. If you and a second person are listed on your PEP application, you will be reserved in a room with that person.

What is the dress code?

Dress is casual! Be comfortable!

A couple of years ago I attended PEP. Can I attend this year?

PEP conferences generally cover the same topics. Therefore, if you attended a conference two years ago, you will most likely encounter similar information this year. Though the PEP Conference Staff looks forward to meeting participants at conferences each year, we advise you to attend no sooner than five years after your first conference. Doing so will give another parent/guardian or professional the opportunity to attend--and benefit from--a PEP Conference.

If I'm put on a PEP wait list am I guaranteed a reservation the following year?

PEP is a highly sought-after conference and slots fill quickly, especially for professionals. Submitting an application does not guarantee a spot at the next PEP conference. However, once placed on the wait list, you will be informed of the next year's conferences and given the opportunity to apply before the conference information is sent to the general public throughout Colorado. PLEASE NOTE: If you are on a wait list, you must still apply for the conference you'd like to attend. PEP conference slots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis; to increase your chances of acceptance to your PEP conference of choice, we recommend you complete your application as soon as possible.
