Alternative Principal Programs

Alternative principal preparation programs are for individuals who are employed as a principal, assistant principal or like role that requires the individual to hold a principal license in order to fulfill the duties of the role. Alternative principal employment opportunities are created through a collaborative effort of the alternative principal and an employing school or district, and through this collaboration, the candidate and school or district create an individualized alternative principal preparation program. (Please note that the school or district and candidate may choose instead to partner with one of the approved programs below in lieu of creating a separate individualized plan.) Program requirements may vary based on a candidate's background and experience, but all plans are required to provide instruction related to the Colorado Principal Quality Standards. Program completion requires demonstration of proficiency in these standards.

Once the individualized program is created via the established template, the alternative principal candidate submits that plan to the Colorado Department of Education within an application for a principal authorization. The plan is then evaluated by Educator Licensure and Educator Preparation offices and, if found sufficient, is then submitted to the Colorado State Board of Education for approval. (If partnering with one of the programs below, state board approval is not required.)

Upon approval, the principal authorization is then issued. Please note: ICandidates are required to hold a valid principal authorization prior to employment. Employment as an Alternative Principal, in an Alternative Principal Program, prior to issuance of a Principal authorization will not be accepted for purposes of program completion or toward fulfilling requirements for an initial license.
