Preparing to Apply

Am I in the Right Place?

This checklist is for applicants who are seeking an alternative teaching license. If you have already completed a CDE-approved teacher preparation program or hold an initial or professional teaching license, please review the other checklists and make the appropriate selection.

Pathways to the Teacher Alternative License

There are three basic pathways to the teacher alternative license, and once you have begun the application, it will direct you through a series of questions that will help determine what you will be issued upon submission of your application.

  • Pathway 1: Use this pathway if you are an applicant who is not yet in an approved alternative teacher preparation program, and do not yet have a full-time position in an elementary or secondary school.
      • Outcome:  If approved, you will be issued a Statement of Eligibility (SOE). The SOE will give directions on the next steps required for the alternative license.
  • Pathway 2: Use this pathway if you are an applicant who was issued an SOE prior to January 4th, 2015, who has now attained employment and entrance in to an approved program.
      • Outcome:  If approved, you will be issued an alternative license and will need to upload a completed and signed Statement of Assurance of Employment form (see below), as well as signed employment documents into the alternative application. If you were issued an SOE after January 4th 2015, follow the directions that came on the SOE that was issued to you. If you need a reprint of that SOE, login to your eLicensing account and complete the reprint application.
      • Useful Information: For this pathway you must be working with a Colorado approved Designated Agency.
  • Pathway 3: Use this pathway if you are an applicant who meets the requirements for an alternative license, have gained entrance in to an approved alternative teaching preparation program, and have secured full-time employment in an elementary or secondary school.
      • Outcome:  If approved, you will be issued an alternative license and will need to upload a completed and signed Statement of Assurance of Employment (see below), as well as signed employment documents into your Alternative application. If you meet all of the requirements, and are issued the Alternative license, you do not require the SOE.
      • Useful Information: For this pathway you must be working with a Colorado approved Designated Agency.
