Putting a Professional License on Inactive Status

During the 1997 legislative session, the legislature passed a law which allows professional license holders in Colorado the privilege of placing their license(s) on Inactive Status.  This new process became effective on November 1, 1997.

22-60.5-109.5 C.R.S. states that any person who holds a Professional License may choose to convert the professional license to inactive status by notifying the Colorado Department of Education in writing and simultaneously transferring, either in person or by first-class mail, the original copy of the professional license to the Colorado Department of Education.  While on inactive status, the expiration date of a professional license shall be suspended.  When the professional license is returned to active status, it shall be valid for the period remaining on the license as of the date the license holder assumed inactive professional license status.  While on inactive professional license status, the person shall be deemed to not hold a professional license.

A person may return a professional license to active status at any time by notifying the Colorado Department of Education, in writing, requesting the return of his or her professional license from the Colorado Department of Education.

When you wish to have your professional license reinstated, please notify us in writing, including your social security number and current mailing address.  We will then reinstate your license and mail it to you.  Our mailing address is:

Colorado Department of Education

Educator Licensing Unit

201 E. Colfax Avenue, Room 106

Denver, CO  80203

Please allow 30 working days for processing from the time we receive your request.

Name Change

CDE requires official documentation from an applicant prior to making a name change for that person.  Please provide a photocopy of the marriage license, divorce degree or court document verifying the name change.  Please mail that documentation to the Educator Licensing Department at the CDE address above.

Duplicate License Request

A duplicate or a reprint of a lost license may be obtained by submitting a written request via the eLicensing system. Under the application section, look for the application titled "Reprint Request". If you are visiting the eLicensing system for the first time, you will first need to create your permanent lifetime account. If you are returning to eLicensing, you will need to log into your account first.

Reprints are $15 per reprint request.
