District Approved Alternative Principal Programs

Individuals may apply for an Alternative Principal Authorization with the Colorado Department of Education. Alternative principal employment opportunities are created through a collaborative effort of the alternative principal and an employing school district or school. Each individual Alternative Principal candidate works with the employing school district or school to create an individualized learning program that is submitted to and approved by the Colorado State Board of Education. Program requirements may vary based on a candidate's background and experience. All programs are required to provide instruction related to the Colorado Principal Quality Standards. Program completion requires demonstration of proficiency in these standards. Please note that a school district, along with the principal candidate, may choose instead to partner with one of the approved programs below in lieu of creating a separate individualized plan.

In order to be employed as an Alternative Principal, candidates are required to hold a valid Principal authorization issued by the Colorado Department of Education prior to employment. Employment as an Alternative Principal, in an Alternative Principal Program, prior to issuance of a Principal authorization will not be accepted for purposes of program completion or for preparation for an initial license.

*Please note: If any changes need to be made to contact information on this list, please send an e-mail request to and it will be updated for you. Thank you!
