Alternative Applicant

Alternative teacher and principal preparation programs provide a pathway to prepare educators with professional experience and content knowledge to meet high need areas in Colorado schools.

Once your application has been approved and your background check was cleared, you can seek employment as an Alternative Teacher or Principal/Assistant Principal while also enrolling in an Alternative Preparation Program.

During an alternative program you will be employed full-time while you receive instruction, mentoring, supervision and assessment of proficiency according to specific performance standards for teacher or principals. Programs are provided by approved Designated Agencies, and meet Colorado standards for obtaining initial licensure.

Alternative Teacher Licensing Program

The Alternative Teacher Licensing Program is offered state-wide. Candidates teach full-time under the supervision of a professional support team, while taking educational coursework from a Designated Agency. Alternative Principal Preparation Program

The Alternative Principal Preparation Program is for applicants who want to become a licensed principal but did not complete an approved Principal Licensure program at a college or university. Candidates are employed as a principal or vice-principal while completing an alternative program offered by a  Designated Agency.
