Dream Big—READ this Summer at Your Local Public Library and at
Home!
Parents, bring your kids ages 0-18 to your local public library this summer! Public libraries across Colorado offer fun Summer Reading Programs that encourage children and teens to read and come to events at the library. Children register for the program—it’s free!—and receive fun incentives when they reach reading goals. Have children under 6? They can participate too when you read to them. Library staff can help everyone in the family find books, audiobooks, magazines, and more at the library that they’ll love to read.
There’s an online tool you can use at home or at your library this summer to help find books for your children at the right reading level. Find a Book Colorado lets you build a list of books based on their Lexile measure (reading ability) and interests. It includes books for children in grades K-12 and books in Spanish.
Reading for fun over the summer is very important for
children and teens. Reading often during the summer helps
students keep up the reading skills they gained during their
last year in school. Kids also read more when they’re having
fun, when they see others reading, and when they can choose
their own reading material. Summer Reading Programs in libraries
and the Find a Book Colorado tool can help your kids read often
and for fun this summer!
This summer, the slogan for the Summer Reading Program is Dream Big—READ and we encourage you and your kids to do just that. Lt. Governor Joe Garcia has challenged Colorado residents to read a total of 2.75 million pages this summer through their libraries’ Summer Reading Programs—that’s 1.25 million more than last year! Help us meet the goal by bringing your children to the library and encouraging them to read this summer. Reading is fun for all ages!
