Bridging Colorado's Digital Divide

Library Impact

On November 8-9 we gathered over 50 Colorado library staff involved in managing public computer centers funded by a BTOP grant and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. We asked them to tell us what has changes because of their BTOP grant experience. Below are some of their statements.

Because of BTOP I can teach...

  • Computer skills to those who are afraid of technology

  • with more confidence

  • students information literacy skills

  • senior citizens new stuff

  • my staff to instruct

  • Spanish language computer instruction

  • about ADA stations!

Because of BTOP I am skilled at...

  • sharing what our lab can do for the community

  • teaching newbies that the computer won't break!

  • helping patrons with technology questions/problems

  • setting up projector without IT guy

  • multi-tasking

  • helping folks who know nothing about computers overcome their fears and embrace these great new tools

  • making people feel more at ease with technology

Because of BTOP I am passionate about...

  • how technology helps kids adapt and learn

  • improving our community through technology

  • teaching low income populations about technology

  • using technology to solve real world problems for our patrons such as job hunting/applications, social security,

  • financial assistance applications, etc.

  • reaching more people in our community

  • access for ALL!

  • bridging the digital divide

  • sharing out lab with other communities

  • connecting people to the world

What I am proud of accomplishing through the BTOP Grant

  • Canon City Public Library: Can’t keep up with 1-0n-1 training requests = success!

  • Cortez Public Library: Seniors learning how to use the computers… they are thrilled

  • Delta County Library District: Patrons can now hunt for a job and apply online. Recently, I had a guy apply online for the first time.

  • East Morgan (Brush) County Library: Every one of our staff is tech savvy!

  • Fleming Community Library: Helping someone from “zero” computer experience to knowing email and web search

  • Franklin Ferguson (Cripple Creek/Victor) Memorial Library: During the Waldo Canyon Fire, we provided wifi, laptops, and desktop computers for the evacuees from Woodland Park. We set up streaming video for new services as well.

  • High Plains (Weld County) Library District: Providing fast internet service to areas that need it so people can

  • connect; Job resource partnership (homeless shelter/workforce/library)

  • Lamar Public Library: Partnerships

  • Limon Memorial Library: Helping people find new jobs

  • Poudre Libraries (Fort Collins): Reaching the poorest of the poor; connection to our community

  • Pueblo City-County Library District: BTOP project led the way to expanding all technology resources through our district

  • Rocky Ford Public Library: How quickly patrons adjusted to laptops

  • Spanish Peaks (Walsenburg) Library: Teaching 89 year old to email his children

  • Sterling Public Library: Making seniors more comfortable with technology

  • Wray Public Library: Internet Buddies program (intergenerational pairs computer training program)
