Commissioner's School Visits
Bennett, Strasburg and Deer Trail School Districts
June 2, 2009

I started my afternoon at Bennett School District where I met,
from left, High School Principal Michael Franklin,
Middle School Principal Amy Burns, Superintendent Rich
Coleman and Elementary Principal Valerie Beard.
I learned an interesting fact from Superintendent Coleman - 80 percent of Bennett's students commute from Aurora. I also learned more about the district's perceptions of the Colorado Growth Model and Standards Review process. While discussing budget and school finance, someone mentioned, "Vody Herrmann must never sleep." Herrmann is CDE's assistant commissioner of public school finance.

Teachers and administrators from Strasburg School District ask
important questions on how to better prepare their children for
college, reduce dropouts and create a better transition from
middle school to high school.

Ginia Gutierrez takes me inside her classroom to see her new
SMART whiteboard. Gutierrez teaches English, AP Literature,
Theatre Tech, Speech and Drama at Strasburg. Beginning with
the 2009-2010 school year, SMART boards will be in
most classrooms.

Deer Trail High School Principal Jeff Bollinger (left) and
Superintendent Brad Caldwell show off their indoor pool. Ninety one
out of 96 students at Deer Trail participate in extra-curricular activities.
