Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Signing with Consul of Spain
Oct. 20, 2009
Today I signed a memorandum of understanding with the Spanish Ministry of Education. The MOU was created to promote relationships between citizens of Colorado and Spain, foster knowledge and appreciation of the culture shared by the two communities, provide students who enroll in the program with a bilingual and multicultural education and to provide professional growth opportunities to teachers in Colorado and Spain.
Each school year, the department and the school districts will cooperate with the ministry in the selection of a number of qualified teachers from Spain who may be hired under local contract in elementary, middle and/or secondary classrooms in school districts in Colorado.
The Ministry will promote the enrollment of teachers and administrators of Colorado in courses provided by Spanish universities for the teaching of Spanish as a second language. Scholarships will be offered to defray part of the costs of said courses.
Currently more than 1,000 U.S. and Canadian teachers are enrolled in the program, including 17 from Colorado.
Diego Fernandez Alberdi, Education Commissioner of the Embassy of Spain in the U.S said, "Spain's goal is to enrich what Colorado is already doing. This is an important training program. We hope the teachers involved in this exchange come back as better teachers."
Colorado has been working on our language standards as a state. We know this program will only accelerate our efforts. We look forward to this partnership and the benefit it can bring to our teachers and students.
