Dec. 16, 2009
Accomplishments and other accolades line the entry wall at Stein Elementary School. Principal Socorro Alarcon says they are there to remind the community of all the collective work that has been done. Alarcon notes that many students couldn't even hold a pencil when they first started the elementary school in Lakewood, now they are being recognized for their academic achievement.
In December the Colorado State Board of Education recognized Stein Elementary School as a Title I Distinguished School for Exemplary Performance. The 2009 Colorado Title I Distinguished Schools were selected by CDE's Office of Federal Program Administration under authorization from No Child Left Behind. In order for the school to be eligible, they had to have a minority population of at least 30 percent and a poverty population of at least 40 percent.
Today I attended a special assembly at the school to celebrate their award. Fourth, fifth and sixth graders attended the assembly and the other grades listened in. On the way to the gymnasium I had the pleasure of meeting Nicole (pictured below), a volunteer for the school. Nicole spoke proudly of all the work she's done in the library. She also asked if she could pose for a photo with me in front of a banner her mother made for the school.
The assembly began with a welcome from Assistant Principal Elizabeth Lohff. Next I was able to address the school. I thanked Stein for all the amazing work they have done. I thanked the teachers for their efforts in the classroom and the parents for the work they do at home. Next I presented the school with a check for $10,000. Bob Murphy, the mayor of Lakewood, also offered his congratulations as did Jane Barnes, a member of the Jefferson County Schools Board of Education and Jefferson County Schools Superintendent Cindy Stevenson. Stein Elementary School principal Alarcon closed the assembly by carefully acknowledging everyone who contributed to the school's success.
I'll remember my afternoon at Stein Elementary and the quote printed in the program, "We've stayed the course...and soared!"
