Authorizers & Districts

In Colorado, only school districts may authorize a charter school to exist (grant a charter contract) EXCEPT when the school district does not have exclusive chartering authority, or when the school district, possessing exclusive chartering authority, grants permission to the charter school to seek authorization through the Colorado Charter School Institute (CSI). This "Institute" is the only other authorizer of charter schools in the state of Colorado.
