  1. CALL TO ORDER

    Chair Pam Suckla welcomed everyone, including new staff: Commissioner Dwight D. Jones, Deputy Commissioner Ken Turner, Mark Stevens (director of communications), Tanya Price (assistant director of communications), Jami Goetz (director of educational licensing) and Mary Frances Nevens (director of state board relations).

  3. INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGE

    Karen Middleton referred to a book from the 1800s titled "The Enemy of Books." Some of the enemies listed therein include dust, fire, heathens, book binders and many others.

    "Today, I think the enemy of books is the fact that people don't read them," she said, "or know how to read them."

    Ms. Middleton introduced a campaign called "Read for the Record," which proposes that as many people as possible read the same book on
    the same day, and thus enter the "Guiness Book of World Records." This year, they are asking everyone to read "Ferdinand the Bull" on Sept. 20.

      Certified the July 2007 through November 2007 amounts payable to school districts for the Public School Finance Act of 1994 (as amended) state share of total program in the monthly amount of $271,019,830.54 and the total amount of $1,355,099,152.70.

    3. "School Capital Construction Expenditures Reserve" and "School Construction and Renovation Fund" Projects

      Approved the projects recommended for award from the School Capital Construction Expenditures Reserve, the School Construction and Renovation Fund, and the Back-Up list.

    4. NASBE Dues

      It was moved by Randy DeHoff and seconded by Peggy Littleton to pay NASBE (National Association of State Boards of Education) dues in the amount of $25,938.

      Randy DeHoff addressed his motion to comment that the more involved he's become in NASBE, the more he has realized the benefits of membership.

      Karen Middleton addressed her second to say that she believes NASBE provides benefits to its members that far exceed the amount of money spent on dues.

      Pam Suckla clarified that if the motion does not pass, that board members are still able to attend meetings and access some of NASBE's services.
