Adult Basic Education Authorization Committee

Mission

To advise the Colorado Department of Education’s Adult Education and Family Literacy (CDE/AEFL) Office on the implementation, development, and management of the Authorization component of its Professional Standards for Adult Educators System.

Roles and Responsibilities of Committee Members

  • Understand the policies, requirements and processes that govern the Authorization in ABE
  • Understand the various routes to authorization (EDU courses, the portfolio process, and equivalent coursework requirements) as defined and described in the Authorization in ABE Handbook
  • Serve as a representative of the Authorization in your local professional community

Duties and Time Commitments of Committee Members

  • Review and evaluate portfolios to determine if the requirements to receive the Certificate of Equivalency for the courses were met. Complete and submit the online evaluation form. (An average of three portfolios per month with an average of 30 minutes – 1 hour spent reviewing each portfolio)
    • Review meeting minutes and submit corrections via email prior to the monthly meetings (one to two hours)
  • Participate in meetings in Denver or via conference call (3-hour monthly meetings except for July)
    • Provide recommendations to CDE/AEFL about the course competencies, processes and policies
  • Review documents (surveys, informational materials, handbook sections) received via e-mail and submit comments or questions by the requested deadline (An average of one to two documents per month)

Information about Serving on the Committee

The Committee is currently seeking to fill open committee positions as soon as possible. Members earn up to 25 Professional Development hours per year and are reimbursed for travel. If you can make a minimum two-year commitment to the committee and carry out the roles, responsibilities and duties listed above, please complete and submit the online application.
