The Colorado Academic Standards were adopted December 10, 2009. The revised standards include early school readiness and postsecondary competencies, as well as reflect both workforce readiness and 21st century skills. In order to measure those new content standards, Colorado is moving to implement a new assessment system.
Phase I began in the spring of 2012 with the introduction of the Transitional Colorado Assessment Program (TCAP). This TCAP will be replaced with a new assessment system that is fully aligned with the Colorado Academic Standards. This new assessment system includes academic measures (the Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS), the Colorado Alternate (CoAlt) assessment, and the Colorado ACT), and the English Language Acquisition (Access for ELLs) assessment.
The first round of field testing for the new content specific computer based assessment science and social studies assessments, which included new item types, occured in April, 2013.
The first operational assessment of science and social studies for Elementary and Middle School students occured in the Spring of 2014. The first operational assessment for Colorado students enrolled at grade 12 is scheduled for November 2014.
