Comprehensive Health Sample Curriculum

Initial Samples Released January 31, 2013

Hello Health Educators,

I am very proud to present the k-12 health curriculum samples created by Colorado educators and teachers. As we worked with facilitators Jamie Hurley (RMC), Kenny Wildenstein (St Vrain Valley) and Jean Gurule (St Vrain Valley), this past fall, over 20 educators came together to translate health standards of the Colorado Academic Standards (CAS) into curriculum. As resources for districts’ voluntary-use, these curriculum samples offer possible options for sequencing the concepts, skills, and content of the CAS across a course or year.

The template upon which all of the samples are based was designed and refined by Colorado educators to highlight what students should understand, know and be able to do at the end of a given unit (detailed description of the curriculum template components). There are some unique aspects to the health samples at particular grade levels, which are documented in the bullet points below.

Together, these samples are intended to support districts’ transition to the CAS and the development of standards-based instructional practices. Please click here to share your thoughts regarding these support resources.

Middle and High School Comprehensive Health Samples

Unique components in middle and high school comprehensive health:

  • Teachers have the flexibility to teach these units over the course of either a semester or a full year.

Elementary Comprehensive Health

Unique components in elementary comprehensive health:

  • Teachers have the flexibility to teach these units at their discretion based on the availability of time for teaching Health. For example: The four units for 4th grade could be taught over the course of a whole year.
