Goals of the Initiative

• To enhance the capacity of districts and schools to establish and maintain
  safe, predictable, effective school environments that maximizes the academic achievement and social emotional competence of all learners in Colorado;
  
  
• To decrease suspension and expulsion rates for all kids, especially those with
  disabilities.

History Summary

CDE has partnered with Districts and BOCES to provide training, technical assistance and support in Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), since the 2002-2003 school year. During the initial demonstration school year, 16 schools in two districts served as pilot sites for PBIS implementation. As of the 2009-2010 school year, 850 schools/facilities in 76 school districts have been trained in PBIS. This translates into just over 350,000 students in the state of Colorado learning in safe and predictable school environments.

Program Summary

In Colorado schools implementing PBIS, the average number of out-of-school suspensions per school dropped from 45 to 22 in three years, while the state average only moved from 43 to 42 during the same time period. Eighty-two Colorado high schools have been trained in PBIS. Fifty-four of these high schools are utilizing data to change adult behavior, while preventing suspensions and expulsions.
