With the SPDG, the Colorado Model Autism and SSN Project (COMASP) initiated Autism sites located in 4 regions of the state, Pikes Peak, West Central, Metro, North Central and Southeast. There consisted of 17 sites within those regions.
Elementary schools were selected as the starting point in each region with a Senior Consultant/Autism Specialist assigned to each region. Preschool and middle schools are added in the second year while high school is added the 3rd year for each region.
Each region has a team which includes a district special education administrator, building administrator, special education teacher, general education teacher, speech and language pathologist, occupational therapist, school psychologist, and other team members identified by the school teams.
Using the Autism Spectrum Disorders Quality Indicators that were completed by the teams and CDE Autism Specialists, areas of professional development are identified for each region as well as short term objectives for each site.
- During year two, the Autism Model Project accepted two elementary schools in 2 new districts as well as four middles schools and two preschools from four previous partner districts. Fidelity of implementation was measured using the CDE-created Autism Program Quality Indicators tool with a goal of 80% in all six domains. Sites in their second year of implementation averaged 45.6% in the fall of 2010 and 62.4% in January/February 2011 (see figure). Thus, making progress toward model status.
