Comprehensive Health and Physical Education

In comprehensive health and physical education, interactions occur between students and their environments that impact healthy decision-making. For example, how do nutrition and exercise affect one’s health, including physical, mental and emotional effects that may or may not be seen or felt? Students also transfer the concept of interactions to identifying and managing stress and conflict inside and outside of the classroom in order to be able to effectively focus, learn and play.

Dance

In dance, interaction between performers and between style elements is essential in conveying the intent of the performance. Performing simple dance phrases alone and in groups requires a strong interactive working relationship. Assessing intended meaning, choosing and applying appropriate dance elements and rehearsing for a performance rely on interaction.

In drama and theatre arts, interaction between performers and the set/stage environment support the story being told in a performance. Performing in dramatic scenes requires synthesis of how characters interact with others and the environment, how the production itself interacts with the audience, and how the group problem-solves to develop a cohesive production. Participating collaboratively within an ensemble requires a strong understanding of group interaction.

In music, interaction is necessary on many levels, from the interaction of notes to form a composition to the interaction of many musicians to create a complex piece of music. Using contrasting themes is evidence of a nuanced level of understanding of interaction between musical phrases. Analyzing interaction in music requires relating context as well as the ability to compare similarities and differences.

In reading, writing and communicating, interaction refers to the exchanges that occur between and among people and texts. In fourth grade, learners actively participate in collaborative discussions. In addition, learners interpret and integrate information from various texts to derive meaning. The interaction of purpose and audience influence the writing process.

In science, interactions between objects and organisms are studied in order to understand the natural word. Matter, organisms, and complex earth systems are all made from interacting parts. How individual parts interact influences and determines how larger systems work.

In social studies, interactions are analyzed to understand the how, why and what of societal systems. In history, interactions between individuals, groups, ideas, and cultures are studied to create an ever evolving story of humans. In geography, exploring the reasons why humans settle in a location is an example of how humans interact with their environment. In economics, markets, consumers, and producers create a system of interaction. In civics, interaction describes how branches of the government work together and citizens relate to government.

Visual Arts

In visual arts, interactions occur between artistic components of a work of art and the social, historical and cultural beliefs of a time period. For instance, an artist may use the interactions of various characteristics and expressive features to create a piece that reflects the interactions between the social, historical, and cultural values of a time period. In addition, the critique of a piece of art reflects the interactions of the social, historical, and cultural value of the art and the person critiquing it.
