This fundamental concept allows for an understanding of the past and a creation of the future. The second grade concept of communication expands on the first grade concept of personal communication by synthesizing various thoughts and ideas, originating from multiple individuals or sources.

Comprehensive Health and Physical Education
In comprehensive health and physical education, communication is the refinement of receptive and expressive language skills for the purpose of being helpful and maintaining safety and inclusivity. The techniques can be used to seek help when others are experiencing an emergency, to refuse unwanted items or experiences, and to confront peer pressure, including bullying and teasing. These communication skills are critical to students establishing healthy behaviors in and out of school so that they can successfully navigate a variety of challenges and contribute to building a safe environment for themselves and their peers.
In dance, communication is reflected in the ideas the choreographer sets as the intention of the dance and the dancer’s projection of that intent. When performing a piece, choreographers and dancers choose rhythms and gestures that are connected to expressing a feeling or mood. Ideas come in many verbal and nonverbal forms and learning to express ideas in many ways enables learners to connect to the world around them through multiple modalities.
Drama and Theatre Arts
In drama and theatre arts, communication involves using basic vocal qualities to convey a message. When a learner utilizes a faster pace for a worried character or a deeper tone for a villainous character, he or she demonstrates the ability to analyze and communicate character intent.
In mathematics, communication happens through student discourse and a variety of representations which display mathematical concepts and relationships. For example, graphs are representations of mathematical thinking that communicate patterns. Second graders use communication to make connections between the mathematical ideas of their classmates.
In music, communication is expressed in multiple ways to show feeling, mood, or topic. Communicating how music relates to a feeling, mood, or topic builds a foundation for communicating how various elements can be connected.
Reading, Writing, and Communicating
In reading, writing and communicating, communication focuses on the ability to express and understand ideas through linguistic and nonlinguistic representation. In second grade, this includes using and understanding specific text structures such as sequence of events, main idea, and supporting details.
In science, the communication of scientific explanations is an important aspect of doing science. Students share their thinking about scientific concepts, cite evidence to support their thinking, and ask others about their scientific claims.
In social studies, communication is the ability to express ideas, information, opinions, and findings. Communication is necessary for researching, analyzing, and sharing information. Historians gather accounts of history through a variety of sources and artifacts to make meaning of the past. Geography uses visual representations such as maps, charts, and photographs to communicate information. In civics, communication of ideas and opinions is critical to the foundation and continuation of our society.
In visual arts, communication of ideas and feelings is conveyed by the artist through the medium and techniques they utilize. Choosing bright, vibrant colors to communicate happiness or dark, looming colors to communicate sadness are all connected to expressing a feeling. Learning to express ideas in many ways enables learners to connect to the world around them through multiple modalities.
In world languages, communication complexity increases where learners use vocabulary and sentence structure to write or verbally explain about an event or personal experience. For example, oral narratives are recorded and played back or learners work together to develop and publish a story. This communication ability provides opportunity for communication with bilingual and multilingual people.
