Robert Hammond Sworn In As Colorado Commissioner Of Education

The Colorado State Board of Education this morning unanimously appointed Robert Hammond as Commissioner of Education.

Hammond, who was first appointed commissioner on an interim basis in December 2010 following the resignation of Dwight D. Jones, has 23 years of K-12 educational leadership experience in such roles as deputy commissioner at CDE and chief operations officer in Boulder Valley School District. Hammond also has five years of experience in business and finance and more than seven years experience in city management.

“As I assume this position, I would like to thank our past two commissioners, William Moloney and Dwight Jones,” said Hammond. “Commissioner Moloney kept Colorado education independent and put Colorado on the map as a leader in choice. Commissioner Jones ignited a spark in Colorado that brought us together with a common vision of reform. Now, I intend to turn that spark into a steady flame, a flame that will stand for higher achievement for children, with no exceptions.

“The State Board of Education desired a commissioner to lead education transformation in Colorado, with a commitment to implementing current reform initiatives, a passion for academic success of all students with a relentless focus on systemic transformation. I share this vision and understand the hard work it requires.

“I will continue to focus on implementing Colorado’s educational reform agenda around standards, assessments, accountability and support, educator effectiveness, awareness and training, and innovation and choice. I strongly believe this is a reform agenda that will increase student achievement, reduce the achievement gap and enable our students to be college and career ready upon graduation,” Hammond added.

State Board Chairman Bob Schaffer said Hammond “quickly rose to the top” of the candidate pool for a variety of reasons, including his leadership experience at the department serving as the right-hand to former Commissioner Jones. “No one has a deeper understanding or firmer grasp” on Colorado’s needs in education reform,” Chairman Schaffer said, “and the board easily came to the conclusion that Robert Hammond is the best leader [for this work]. We are all optimistic and energized and just as pleased as can be.”

Board Member Debora Scheffel said she appreciates Hammond’s “humility, candor and his commitment to excellence” and Board Member Paul Lundeen noted that Hammond has already shown an ability to keep a “steady hand on the tiller.”

Added Board Member Angelika Schroeder: “Welcome to the team."
