Colorado State Board Of Education Members Selected To Assist With National Policy Issues

The National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) announced that two members of the Colorado State Board of Education have been asked to join groups working on national policy issues.

Elaine Gantz Berman has been chosen to serve on the NASBE’s Governmental Affairs Committee, and Angelika Schroeder was selected to serve on a year-long study group—Preparation, Evaluation, Continuation & Compensation: A State Policy Agenda to Enhance the Teaching Profession.

Board member Jane Goff of the 7th Congressional District continues her participation on the NASBE board of directors as one of two representatives of the Western region.

The Governmental Affairs Committee is the entity responsible for developing federal policy recommendations and communicating with U.S. Congress and federal officials about the education reform priorities of state boards of education. The committee helps state board members understand, influence and plan for federal education policies.

As a member of the 19-member panel, Gantz Berman, who represents the 1st Congressional District in Colorado, will meet with other state education leaders, national policymakers, federal lawmakers and education reform experts during a yearlong series of meetings, events and communications to share experiences and perspectives, analyze federal education initiatives, promote state board of education priorities and serve as a state education resource to congressional offices and staff.

“I look at this as a wonderful opportunity to share ideas and learn more about what other states are doing,” said Gantz Berman. “Being able to influence federal education policies provides a chance for Colorado to have our voice heard and I will take full advantage of the opportunity.”

As a participant in the NASBE study group, Schroeder, who represents the 2nd Congressional District, will help examine educator preparation and professional development, performance evaluations and the impact of the Common Core State Standards on classroom instruction.

“I look forward to meeting with my peers to examine a series of issues at the core of teaching and learning,” said Schroeder.

“In this time when many education budgets remain unstable and there has been substantial turnover in political leadership, it is critical that lawmakers in Washington and at the state level understand the vital and sustained role of state boards of education,” said NASBE Executive Director Brenda Welburn.

The study group will issue a comprehensive report in October 2011 at the NASBE Annual Conference in Atlanta, Ga.
