Instructional Resources - Comprehensive Health and Physical Education

Teaching the Colorado Academic Standards in social studies is supported through a wide array of free instructional resources. This webpage lists just a few of these resources and will be updated regularly. If you are an educator in Colorado and have suggestions for a great free resource please email Terry Jones. Comprehensive Health

The Aligning Learning with Learners Guide: Classroom Approaches to Addressing the Needs of All Youth (ALL Guide) - Use this diagnostic tool to assess the cultural appropriateness and inclusiveness of health education instruction, assessment strategies and classroom climate. Then, consult the ALL Guide for strategies and resources to enhance the inclusiveness of your instruction. 

American Association for Health Education - Find resources, professional development, and advocacy tools for health education and promotion. 

Effective Programs Archive – Sociometrics - Access outstanding research-to-practice prevention programs in key health areas, such as teen pregnancy, HIV/AIDS and substance abuse prevention.

HealthTeacher - Get K-12 health curriculum and lessons geared toward all teachers, regardless of whether they have professional preparation as a health educator.

National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP SAMHSA) - Use this searchable online registry of more than 190 interventions to find resources to promote mental health, prevent substance abuse and support treatment.

School Health Education Resources (SHER) - Access the myriad school health education resources from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Search by grade level, topic or language (including English, Spanish and Chinese) to find curriculum and lessons, fact sheets, materials for students, and instructional materials for educators.

Action for Healthy Kids - Tap this national network supporting schools as healthy places where kids learn to eat right, be active every day and be ready to learn.

American Association for Physical Activity and Recreation - Find resources for adaptation of physical education instruction and activities for students with disabilities.

Head Start Body Start - Use these resources to bring active play and meaningful movement into the home, Head Start or early childhood program 

National Association for Sport and Physical Education - Visit this site for teaching tools and guidance documents to connect with students, implement best practices, educate parents and motivate children to engage in a lifetime of physical activity.

Building Bridges for Children’s Mental Health in Colorado - Get tools for families and schools such as tip sheets and presentations to support behavioral health education in public schools.

Center for Mental Health in Schools - Find resources, online trainings, learning communities and exchanges, guides to evidence-based practices, and the latest research supporting mental health education in schools.

Colorado Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports - Get support on developing an effective school environment with explicit instruction for social and emotional skills, including bully prevention, and shared expectations and positive reinforcements for behavior.

Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) - Access the numerous nationally available, evidence-based social and emotional learning programs that provide systematic classroom instruction to enhance children’s abilities to recognize and manage their emotions, appreciate the perspectives of others, establish pro-social goals and solve problems, and use a variety of interpersonal skills to handle the challenges of growing up.

Bullying Prevention

Anti-Defamation League – No Place for Hate Campaign - Find out about this effort in the Mountain States region to organize schools to work together and develop projects that enhance the appreciation of diversity; access tools and strategies to promote respect for individual and group differences while challenging prejudice and bigotry.

CDE's Office of Bullying Prevention and Intervention - Get support on developing an effective school environment with explicit instruction for social and emotional skills, including bully prevention, and shared expectations and positive reinforcements for behavior.

Colorado School Safety Resource Center - Explore this website offering a wealth of resources for educators and to learn more about the Colorado School Safety Resource Center’s work with schools and communities to create safe and successful school environments for students.

Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN) - This site provides resources on creating a safe and respectful climate for students who are or who are perceived to be lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered and includes safe school toolkits and resources for teachers including lesson plans and activities

Stop Bullying Now! - Visit this US Department of Education and Department of Health and Human Services combined site for resources on bullying prevention for teachers, other school staff, law enforcement, mental health professionals, parents, and students.
